I always come back home refreshed and energized. Unfortunately, my skin doesn’t always love camping as much as I do. For years, I would go camping with glorious skin, and come back with pimples, black heads, sunburns and dry patches. Even though I would keep up with my regular skincare routine, I couldn’t get the same results I was getting back home. It took me years to realize that that was specifically the problem: I was maintaining my regular skincare routine, the one that was working at home, in the city, where I would spend most days inside. That needed re-adjusting. When camping, your skin is exposed to a myriad of factors; the sun, the water (the one you’re drinking or the one you’re swimming in), the wind, the bugs, the dirt… It’s bound to leave some damage. Luckily, only a few products can remedy to all that, and guarantee that your skin will be as happy and relaxed as you are. Sunscreen Okay, we’ll start with the most obvious. But it’s also the most important! When on vacation, we typically get a lot more sun exposure than we normally would, because we spend most of our time outside. When camping, we’re even more exposed, because there is literally no “inside”, no place to hide (unless you want to spend your days in the shower or staring at the ceiling of your tent). In such conditions, using sunscreen becomes extremely important, not just to prevent sunburns, but also to save your skin from premature signs of aging. I recommend using a sunscreen that smells nice and that you genuinely like; don’t get the greasy one that smells like middle school. The goal is to find one that you won’t mind smelling constantly, and applying multiple times a day. I use the Hawaiian Tropic Sheer Touch one. After-sun lotion After a full day under the scorching sun, it is crucial to restore some moisture back into your skin. The sun can be extremely damaging for the skin, even skin protected by sunscreen, and can leave it irritated and dry. After-sun lotions feel incredible; they sooth and hydrate, while feeling very luxurious. Using one is like slowly sinking into a milk bath. Plus, they all have that beachy/summery smell. I’ve never come across one that didn’t smell like a fresh summer morning by the water. My favorite is Vichy Capital Soleil Soothing Milk. Body Wash Camping showers are very rudimentary. Sometimes, if you’re lucky, you can find one that is somewhat private and that doesn’t host ten different species of spiders. But even in the cleanest cubicle, you’ll rarely find anything more than a small bench and a fogged up mirror. Bringing your own soap is essential. I like to use the travel size of my favorite body wash, because it is easy to carry and quick to use (you don’t get much time in a camping showers. The quicker, the better.) On my last camping trip, I had brought the Endless Weekend shower gel from Bath and Body Works. Thermal Water I like to carry a small bottle of thermal water in my bag, especially on extra hot days. I am not someone who can handle the heat easily; I actually have quite a hard time staying in the sun for long. After a while, I feel burned all over (even if I’m meticulously applying sunscreen), I get irritated in all possible ways, and I develop a banging headache. However, I find that spraying my face with thermal water when I start to feel too warm considerably helps calm me down. I like the Avène Thermal Spring Water, because they have a really tiny bottle that easily fits into any bag and is light to carry around. Insect repellent Some people get eaten alive by bugs. I am unfortunately one of those people, and I’m here to testify that insect repellent is a lifesaver. When you are camped out in the depths of the woods, with nowhere to hide, that little spray bottle becomes your best friend. Granted, it doesn’t smell good, but it’s a small price to pay to be left alone by our winged friends. I’ve always used Off Deep Woods, simply because it protects me from a wide variety of blood-thirsty bugs. Cleansing Wipes I think cleansing wipes have secretly been invented for camping. They come in so handy! It is so easy to wash your face at night, or in the morning, if you don’t have access to running water from your camp site. I like to bring cleansing wipes, and not makeup removing wipes, because that way I can also use them to clean any other part of my body that needs a little refreshing throughout the day. I always bring my trusty Neutrogena Pink Grapefruit Oil-Free Cleansing Wipes. They smell great, and don’t leave any greasy residue behind. Face Wash When I’m camping, I never wear any makeup. I like to use that time in nature to give my skin a break and let it soak in the clean, fresh air. Regardless, dirt still accumulates during the day, so I like to use a gentle face wash in the shower, just to make sure I don’t go to bed with a dirty face (hello pimples). Last time, I used the Neutrogena Ultra Gentle daily cleanser, and it definitely got the job done. Again, I always bring the travel size. Micellar water would also be a great alternative to a face wash, especially since it doesn’t require any rinsing. Lip balm with SPF If your lips have ever gotten sunburned, you know the importance of wearing lip balm with an SPF. During the day, our lips endure so much; we eat, we talk, we kiss, we drink, they’re exposed to the wind, and the sun, and the salt water… They go through a lot. I always carry a lip balm with me, whether in my bag or in my pocket, and I apply it multiple times a day (at least five thousand times!). When I’m camping, I make sure to bring one that is extra moisturizing and that’ll protect my lips from the burning sun. I really like the eos Active Protection in fresh grapefruit. I find that eos lip balms are particularly moisturizing, and they really sink into your lips. But beware: only the Active Protection ones have an SPF. Finally, don’t forget to bring your favorite moisturizer or oil. While it can be tempting to go full-on vacation mode and barely touch any product while camping, it is super important to maintain some sort of skincare routine. Make sure to keep your skin moisturized, clean and protected. Also, try to avoid bringing products that have a very sweet or strong smell; the animals will be attracted to it and you might find a little furry friend foraging in your luggage. I like to keep all of my beauty products in a toiletry bag that I keep locked away in the car. Lastly, make sure you’re not leaving any waste behind; rinse products in the shower or in a sink, and dispose of single-use products like cleansing wipes properly. Taking care of our skin is important, but so is respecting the environment. Happy camping! Much love,
-TM-
