4/15/2018 0 Comments Movies Perfect for Date NightWho doesn’t like a good old movie night? I enjoy watching movies even by myself, but I particularly enjoy watching movies with my boyfriend. Along with a cup of tea or some popcorn, under a warm blanket, it is the perfect way to end the night. The only problem is, men and women don’t always like the same movies. So we end up making some kind of compromise: “Okay, we’ll watch The Notebook tonight, but tomorrow we’re watching Pumping Iron.” While it is fun to make your other half happy by indulging in their favorite movie, it’s even nicer to find a movie you’ll both enjoy. Here are a few movies that I think can be thoroughly enjoyed by everyone involved. Breakfast Club 1985. A John Hughes movie. Starring Judd Nelson, Molly Ringwald, Ally Sheedy, Emilio Estevez, Anthony Michael Hall and Paul Gleason. Yes, we are starting with an oldie. I feel like this is one of those movies that everyone knows about, without necessarily having seen it. Kind of like E.T. The story is quite simple: five teenagers have to spend a whole Saturday in detention, for various reasons. But what happens during detention isn’t that simple. This is a movie about love, stereotypes, bullies, sex, friendship, social ranks, authority, drugs, hardships... The list doesn’t end. I feel like we all can relate to at least one of the many topics addressed in this movie. It is great for date night because it is sure to spark a conversation. Moreover, it is filled with little details; you could watch it a thousand times over and still notice something new. This movie is the perfect excuse to see your date again: you have to watch that movie more than once. The Skeleton Key 2005. An Iain Softley movie. Starring Kate Hudson. This is the perfect in-between if one of you likes horror movies, but the other one doesn’t. This doesn’t qualify as a horror movie, but it is spooky. It follows the story of Caroline, a hospice nurse who takes up a new job in New Orleans. As she cares for an elderly man in poor condition, and gets to know his wife, she uncovers secrets that should have stayed buried. This movie won’t keep you up at night (it doesn’t feature either ghosts or gory murders), but it will definitely make you want to hold hands. The Outsiders 1983. A Francis Ford Coppola movie. Starring Rob Lowe, Ralph Macchio, Matt Dillon, C. Thomas Howell, Tom Cruise, Patrick Swayze, Diane Lane, Emilio Estevez and Leif Garrett. I can’t imagine anyone who wouldn’t like this movie. Based in Tulsa in the 1980’s, it depicts the life of the Greasers. Poor and considered "low class", they’re engaged in a never ending battle with the opposing gang, the Socs, from the wealthier side of town. The story focuses mainly on Ponyboy Curtis, a young Greaser, and his life with his brothers and fellow gang members. Based on the novel of the same name by S.E. Hinton, it is the perfect movie to watch with your other half, because it features equal parts of romance and street fights, hot guys and dark crimes. It might be a little bit harder to find than more recent movies, but it is worth the search, believe me. Wonder Woman 2017. A Patty Jenkins movie. Starring Gal Gadot. This is super mainstream, but it is such a good movie, I had to include it in this list. It is the story of Wonder Woman, from Diana’s childhood with the Amazonian people to her fight to protect the world, years later. If, like me, you are not DC savvy (but your partner is!), this is an excellent movie to watch, as you don’t need a lot of backstory to understand. It has action, romance, a little fantasy and a lot of epic-ness. Plus, Chris Pine is part of the movie, so you just know it can’t be boring. Scream 1996. A Wes Craven movie. Starring Neve Campbell, Courteney Cox and David Arquette. This is a good movie because it is gory without being over-the-top and just plain disgusting. It’s scary, but not enough to keep you up for weeks. It’s funny, but it’s not ridiculous either. I feel like it is perfectly balanced. It follows the story of Sidney Prescott, barely recovering from her mother’s death when she finds herself being stalked by a mysterious killer. The whole town of Rosewood is under alert, including fearless reporter Gale Weathers and innocent deputy sheriff Dewey Riley. As they try to discover the identity of the killer, they realize the story might be deeper than they initially thought. There are three more movies following this one, which is perfect for a Scream marathon if you want to prolong your date. All four movies are extremely good, with badass scenarios and great soundtracks. If blood makes you or your partner queasy, maybe stay away from this slasher movie, but if not… knock yourselves out. That Awkward Moment 2014. A Tom Gormican movie. Starring Zac Efron, Michael B. Jordan and Miles Teller. I couldn’t make a post like this without including a romantic comedy. This one is super funny, sexy, and most importantly, it is not sappy. I feel like romantic comedies can be either extremely good, or extremely bad. And a lot of the time, the actors can make all the difference. In this case, I think the cast is perfect. This movie is not cringe-worthy, it doesn’t make you cry (from sadness or despair), and it manages to stay light while still having meaning. It follows the story of Jason, Daniel and Mikey, three friends with disastrous love lives. In order to escape the constant drama that relationships bring, they make the pact to stay single. But like always… love has other plans. This is a great movie to watch on a date if you are already in a relationship. However, beware, if you’re still figuring things out with your date, this movie might make things a bit awkward, literally. Enjoy your date! Much love,
-TM-
