This week marks the first anniversary of my blog. That’s right, exactly one year ago I posted on this blog for the very first time, not knowing what would happen, or if anyone would even read my posts. One year later, Tea and Mascara has grown quite a bit, and I am so proud of it. If you’ve been here since the beginning, thank you from the bottom of my heart. If you’ve just discovered my blog, welcome! I’m thrilled to have you here and I hope you’ll find some things that'll inspire you. The first post ever on this blog was Secret Weapons for Radiant Skin. I live in Montreal, and the winter is always very cold and pretty windy. The snow, the icy air, and the general absence of sun make my skin dry, irritated and drab. Over the years, I’ve built an artillery of beauty weapons that helps me keep my skin happy and radiant throughout the colder months. Today, to celebrate the anniversary of Tea and Mascara, I am sharing a couple more tips and tricks to maintain a natural glow. If you haven’t seen the first part, find it here. Let’s jump in. Lemon Water Lemon is a natural antibacterial and is rich in vitamin C. I like to start everyday with a small glass of lemon water, which I drink as soon as I wake up. Not only does it boost your immune system and helps wake you up, but it is also extremely beneficial for the skin. It helps your skin restore its natural beauty by fighting off acne, and by providing essential nutrients. Plus, our body is usually pretty dehydrated when we wake up (unless we spent the night drinking water), so that small glass of fluid is good for a multitude of reasons. Finally, it tastes just like lemonade, so it’s easier to enjoy in the morning than plain water. Homemade Face Mask Face masks are amazing, because they hydrate your skin while soothing it and removing dead skin cells. The downside is that they can be pretty expensive, especially the high-end ones. I learned this face mask recipe when I was a teenager and I can’t tell you how many times it saved my skin during these difficult hormonal years. It is super simple to make, from ingredients that you probably already have in your fridge. The yogurt base boosts your skin’s moisture while soothing it, just like the oatmeal, which also acts as a delicate scrub. In addition, oatmeal is full of antioxidants that help limit the damages of UV rays, pollution or aging. The lemon and the honey are both antibacterial and give your complexion a little boost. Finally, the acid in the strawberries help fight off oily skin. This is the ultimate, all encompassing face mask. DIY Yogurt Face Mask
I suggest taking the yogurt out of the fridge a couple minutes prior, so that it’s not uncomfortably cold on your skin. In a small bowl, mix together all of the ingredients. Apply onto clean skin. Let sit for about 15 minutes, before rinsing off with lukewarm water. Pat your skin dry with a soft towel and apply your favorite moisturizer. This mask leaves your skin looking nourished, replenished and radiant. Eat these! Some of the articles in your fridge are actually skin-savers. For example, avocados and salmon have loads of omega-3 fats and are packed with vitamin E and C, which help your skin maintain its elasticity. Walnuts are also filled with fatty acids like omega-3, in addition to combating bacteria, just like lemon and honey. Sweet potatoes, red or yellow bell peppers and tomatoes are an excellent source of beta-carotene, which can protect your skin from the harmful UV rays. Finally, dark chocolate is packed with antioxidants that, in addition to also protecting your skin from sun damage, helps it stay hydrated and radiant. Face Roller I recently jumped on the bandwagon of using a face roller and I’ve definitely noticed some improvements. A lot of people like to use a jade roller, but there are also a lot of cheaper alternatives out there. I use the Wooden Facial Massager from the Body Shop, and I am so happy with it. Rolling this over your skin after applying your moisturizer helps improve blood circulation and makes sure your moisturizer is being completely absorbed. I am one of those people who tend to get a bluish complexion during the winter, which means that my face tends to look extremely pale and unhealthy. Using this has made me come back to life; it gives a pretty flush to my cheeks, my skin feels supple and generally much healthier. You can also do this in the morning to reduce eye bags, which will definitely help you get that radiant look. Bio-Oil Acne scars definitely don’t help the skin radiance. They are often dry and surrounded by skin discoloration. Unfortunately, for some people, they are very hard to avoid and even harder to get rid of. I like to use Bio-Oil right after my shower, before applying my moisturizer, on the areas of my face that need a little love, like my cheeks and chin. Over time, it noticeably reduces the appearance of the scars, revealing the beautiful and glowing skin underneath. These are just a couple things that help you maintain that healthy glow through the year. Don’t forget to check out Secret Weapons for Radiant Skin – part 1 for extra tips. Taking care of your skin is important year long, but it becomes crucial in the winter, especially if you live in a cold climate that will most likely make your skin very unhappy. A healthy glow starts from good hydration, proper skin care and a balanced lifestyle. Lastly, do things that make you happy! Smiling is the best way to have a radiant look. I love you all so much and I’ll see you next week! Much love,
-TM-
