7/7/2019 0 Comments Summer EssentialsThe beginning of summer was a bit chilly and rainy, but I think it is now safe to say that summer is here to stay! Consequently, I’ve busted out all of my summer essentials – articles that I need to survive the hot and humid summer. These are all things that I use practically every single day during the warm season. Growing up, I was never a fan of summer. I much preferred winter, when you can cozy up in fuzzy sweaters and make warm and comforting food. Over the years, however, I’ve learned to enjoy summer and it’s mainly because of these items. They help me feel better in the scorching heat and they make me see the perks summer months can bring. Tinted Lip Balms I always wear some sort of lip color because I find that it makes me look a lot more awake and healthy. However, during the summer, I tend to wear less makeup, so I don’t necessarily feel like wearing a bold lip or a thick lipstick. I discovered tinted lip balms a few years ago and I’ve been obsessed with them ever since. They provide hydration, a dash of color and a sprinkle of shine. They conveniently come in a lot of summer shades as well, like pinks and corals. They look really cute on; I always have one in my purse. Keep an eye out for next week’s post to discover some of my favorites. Iced Tea A lot of people like to have a cup of tea at night, or at breakfast, to start the day. But when it’s 35˚ outside and being in bed makes you feel like you’re in the tropical forest, having a cup of tea sounds like a chore rather than a treat. That’s why I like iced tea. It’s just as quick to make and it helps keep you cool. Simply brew a small portion of tea in a Mason jar and add a ton of ice cubes. Fruit infusions, green tea and rooibos are great to have cold. SPF/ After Sun Protecting your skin from the sun is very important, for many reasons. We all want to avoid skin cancer, sun spots, skin discoloration, sun burns and wrinkles. Working at an amusement park for 7 years taught me how much damage the sun can do and the importance of being proactive. I always start my morning routine by applying a moisturizer with SPF, and I follow up with face sunscreen if I know I’ll spend lots of time outdoors. A also apply my favorite sunscreen all over my body before heading out the door and I make sure to cover my tattoo with a high SPF sunscreen to prevent discoloration. Low Top Converse Even though I own a pair, I’m not a fan of sandals, especially for running errands and going to work. I much prefer wearing a comfortable pair of sneakers. I adore Converse because they look cute with literally any outfit, even long dresses and skirts. They are comfortable and thin enough to keep your feet cool. I also like that the more you wear them, the better they look, so you can go on plenty of adventures with these bad boys. Although I am a fan of the classic high tops, low tops look better with dresses and shorts (and are less warm). Every year, I buy a new pair and they become my summer staple (although they are super cute and cult classics, Converse tend to break at some point. If you wear them every day, they will probably last you 2 or 3 years. It gives you a reason to buy a new pair frequently!) Pink Lipstick/Lip Balm As much as I love a vampy lip during the winter, I’m all about pink lips in the summer. I think it looks adorable, while being super natural. I especially appreciate hot pink shades, because they are bold with a hint of innocence. The Body Shop Peppermint Cooling Foot Lotion Am I the only one to walk more during the summer? I don’t know if it’s because we go on more adventures, or because it’s warmer, or because shoes are less comfortable than boots, but my feet are always killing me at the end of a summer day. I discovered this cooling foot lotion while I was working at the park, and it feels so good to apply at the end of the day – it almost makes me cry. Even my boyfriend is addicted to it now. There is also a cooling spray that exists in the same collection, which is great to carry in your bag or if you don’t like applying lotion when it’s boiling hot outside. Rompers/Dresses When I get to stay home all day, I love wearing rompers, because they are flowy, easy to put on, super cute and not warm at all. However, it’s not exactly work apparel. When I go to work, I love wearing dresses. I like how elegant they look, and you can easily dress them down by pairing them with a pair of Converse sneakers. It’s a super comfortable outfit, and the best part is that longer dresses don’t blow up in the wind. Mini Deodorant I always carry a mini deodorant in my purse, especially during the summer. My commute to work involves two short walks, and while they are very enjoyable, they do cause me to sweat a bit. It’s nice to have a mini deodorant in your bag so you can freshen up when you get to work, or throughout the day if you work somewhere hot. Bandeau Top Bandeau tops or strap-free bralettes are great during the summer because they are extra comfortable and they allow you to wear tank tops with spaghetti straps or open sides without exposing your bra. You also don’t get that funny tan that brands your bra straps on your skin for the rest of the summer. Stainless Steel/Sterling Silver Jewelry Cheap jewelries are great during the winter and some of them do last a very long time if you don’t get them wet. However, during the summer, the jewelries you’re wearing are being exposed to all sorts of dangerous factors; water, sweat, sun, salt water… If you’re wearing jewelries that are simply gold or silver plated, they’ll tarnish super quickly and/or lose their color. For the summer, I feel like it’s worth investing in better quality pieces that won’t tarnish when they’re exposed to the elements. I usually buy one new piece at the beginning of every summer; that way, you don’t break the bank, but you’re able to grow a small collection of waterproof jewelries. Stainless Steel Water Bottle My friends all say that I buy too many water bottles, but I swear, you need a water bottle for every occasion! For the summer, I recently discovered the power of stainless steel bottles. They keep your water cold for hours, even if your bottle is at the bottom of your bag, lying in the sun all day. That’s what I bring to work and I’m assured to get a cold drink whenever I’m thirsty, no matter the temperature. Also, they are now really easy to find and they come in all sorts of super cute patterns. Ice Cream If you follow me on Instagram (the link is always up top, between the two banners), you know that every summer my cookie addiction turns into an ice cream addiction. Ice cream is my favorite dessert during the warmer months, and I’m not ashamed to say I have it almost every single day. I don’t just love the taste of ice cream and the fact that it cools you off; I also love the activity of going to get ice cream and eating it outside on a warm summer night. There are so many types of ice cream available, from plain vanilla to candy galore. You can also get less caloric options, like frozen yogurt, or tubs of CoolWay or Halo Top. To finish, I want to add that my boyfriend, Niko, is the one who really helped me reconcile with summer. He loves the heat and the sun, and he’s the one who helped me realize that I could indulge in some of the items on this list without feeling guilty. For example, it’s okay to have ice cream everyday during the summer. You’re allowed to wear dresses out of the house, even if it means that you’re not completely covered. It’s okay if you’re sweaty; it’s summer! Put on your shades and enjoy the sunshine. Have a great summer, guys! Much, much love,
